Leon and Troy Corstens will still have a Classic runner this weekend, despite Vinery Stud Stakes-winning filly Montoya’s Secret missing the ATC Australian Oaks.
Malua Racing will be represented in the Group 2 Schweppes WATC Derby (2400m) by progressive three-year-old Rock With You at Ascot on Saturday.
Troy Costens says the stars have aligned for the son of Fastnet Rock, who won his maiden just last start at Benalla, but explains the manner in which he scored shows he deserves his chance.
“When we took him to Benalla I thought he’d have to win convincingly to deserve a trip over to WA, and 13 lengths was probably enough,” Corstens said in jest.
“We entered him for the race quite a while ago because we’ve always thought he was a horse with good staying ability, and it really just fell into line.
“He’s sound and he’s fit and you can’t run in a Derby next year.
“He’s handled the trip really well, and all reports are that he’s settled in beautifully.”
Rock With You’s chances have been enhanced on Friday with the scratching of $2.50 favourite Royal Star. Rock With You is rated an $11 chance with CrownBet, and Corstens admits the barrier draw wasn’t in their favour.
“They’ve given us the Victorian’s draw that’s for sure, in Barrier 12,” Corstens said.
“But we won’t change our tack at all, we’ll let the speed roll in front of us and sit back and swoop.
“We’ve always liked him as a staying horse and I think the best is really ahead of him as well.”
