Late in yesterday sale’s session, a Bowness Stud-offered colt by Starcraft (Soviet Star) was bought by Carmel Size Racing on behalf of Hong Kong owner Boniface Ho Ka Kui for $340,000.
Size, who manages Kui’s bloodstock interests who race under the Legend moniker in Hong Kong, said she had to go beyond what she thought the colt would make but was determined to buy him.
Catalogued as Lot 541, the colt is the fifth living foal out of the three-time winner Mrs Bradbury (Keltrice) who has had three foals to race for two winners.
His second dam Ginette (Rory’s Jester) is a three-quarter sister to Group Three winner Sammy The Bull (Rory’s Jester) and a half-sister to Listed winner Vale Of Avoca (Some Lute).
The colt’s sire, the Rosemont Stud-based Starcraft, has sired 13 winners in Hong Kong including the stakes winner Blizzard.
“I think he is a cracking individual and I loved the way he walked. He is targeted to go to Hong Kong and we bought him because the stallion is successful there,” Size told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“What we normally do is get them broken in and raise them and then we qualify them to go to Hong Kong. I work for Mr Bon Ho who has all the Legend horses and is racing Southern Legend in Hong Kong at the moment.”
Size admitted she did not think she would have to go to $340,000 to secure the colt yesterday.
“We wanted him because he is a wonderful individual. We missed out on a high-priced one (on Sunday), so we had a bit more to play with today,” she said.
“For the better bred horses it has been a strong market.”
