Biggest ever Rosemont draft at Magic Millions 2019

Following the release this week of the catalogue for the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Rosemont Stud is proud to preview our draft for the January sale. With 26 yearlings in the catalogue, we are taking our biggest draft ever to the Gold Coast and have included horses of all levels to appeal to every sector of the wide buying bench that typically assembles at the first yearling sale of the new year.

Our horses have already been brought into stables and begun their sales preparation and after an ideal Spring in Victoria weather wise, we are confident that they will present in perfect condition in January under the watchful eye of our yearling manager Karen Sinclair.

Rosemont Stud Operations Manager Gerard Jones

Farm manager Gerard Jones has been particularly happy with the way the preparation has begun.

“Taking such a large draft to the Gold Coast is no easy task and the pressure is on the team to make sure we get it right. However we are a large farm now with a lot of quality stock and when you are selling horses the quality of Santa Ana Lane, Thrillster, Hey Doc, Runaway, Prairie Fire and Fuhryk as we have done in recent years then you know that the expectations of the buying market are only going to get higher. That’s great for the farm and the team is well and truly up for the challenge.”

Pressed on his favourites from the draft, Jones nominated two fillies – a Pierro filly out of Fastnet Rock mare I’m In Love and a Hinchinbrook filly out of Guapa.

“Both are beautiful fillies – great movers with lovely natures, they both have a lot of quality about them and I’m sure they are going to be very popular.”

Catalogued as Lot 670, the Pierro filly is the first foal from her three time winning mother hailing from a highly successful family of American black type winners. This is also the family of French Classic winner and sire Astronomer Royal.

The Hinchinbrook filly (Lot 636) is the second foal of the American mare Guapa and also boasts a deep pedigree of American stakes winners. The family also features Gr 1 winning siblings Assertive Lad and Assertive Lass, the dam of successful sire Reset. She is a home bred for Rosemont and follows on from her half sister by Deep Field who also sold on the Gold Coast last year, knocked down to the winning bid of NSW trainer Matthew Smith for $160,000.

Jones is also excited to be taking two fillies to the sale by the all-conquering stallion I Am Invincible.

“The I Am Invincible fillies are flying. When you go through the list and see Oohood, Viddora, I Am a Star, Invincibella, Eckstein, Fiesta, Invincible Gem, Pure Elation – his fillies seem to be winning a stakes race every week and these two fillies are both early running types that fit his mould. I saw the Kemizengo filly running around the paddock the other day and she looked like you could throw a saddle on her and win races tomorrow.”

The filly Jones refers to is out of the winning Redoute’s Choice mare Kemizengo (Lot 711) who is a full sister to Master of Design from the family of Princess Tracy, the Irish mare who earned fame in these parts as the mother of Danasinga and Tracy’s Element, dam of Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy and Queensland sire Red Element. Rosemont’s other I Am Invincible filly (Lot 502) is the first foal from the winning Darci Brahma mare Darcibelle, a half sister to Darren Weir’s progressive sprinter-miler Superhard.

 Top quality colts

As well as some quality fillies, the Rosemont draft also features some outstanding colts who are sure to attract strong appeal from buyers. High on the list is the Written Tycoon colt from the winning High Chaparral mare High Above, catalogued as Lot 652. The colt is the second foal of the mare whose first foal, a colt by Smart Missile, sold for $125,000 at Melbourne Premier earlier this year. He comes from the family of dual Group 1 winning Derby champion Prized Icon and is a fantastic type who Jones is sure will be popular with buyers.

“The Written colt is a typical product of his sire. He’s medium sized, very correct, a good walker and has a great temperament. He reminds me a lot of the Written colt that Mill Park sold last year who was a full brother to Booker. He has a Derby winner in his pedigree but I think he will run early.”

Any vendor with a large draft at Magic Millions is sure to have a Snitzel included and at Lot 415, we are proud to present the flashy chestnut colt out of Choisir mare Bourgogne. The mare has already produced two stakes horses in Lizard Island and Fairy Star from her five to race and comes from the family of Oaks winning blue hen Bulla Borghese.

Champion stallion Fastnet Rock is well represented in the draft with two fantastic colts with stallions pedigrees. Lot 689 is out of the Group 2 placed O’Reilly mare Irish Nova. She is already the mother of a dual Group 1 winning sprinter in Sacred Star and is a full sister to the mother of recent NZ Group 1 winners Embellish and Diademe. Lot 291 is another home bred for Rosemont from the American stakes winning mare Wild Mia. This colt is a half-brother to Rosemont’s promising filly Wild Flyer who won the VOBIS Gold Ingot as a two year old at her second race start and was promptly put in the paddock with bigger targets in mind.

Spirit of Boom is a sire who took his first season by storm and buyers looking to get in early will target Lot 9, the colt out of the More Than Ready mare Pegasus Miss. The mare is a winning half sister to stakes winners Snitzepeg and Metallic Crown and her first foal, a full sister to this colt, sold last year at Magic Millions for $155,000. He is another favourite of Jones.

“The Boom colt is definitely one of my favourites – he is a fantastic type with a great attitude and a real presence about him. He looks and acts like he wants to be a racehorse.”

Introducing Nostradamus

A feature of our draft for the Magic Millions is the introduction of the first yearlings presented for sale by Rosemont stallion Nostradamus. To be sold in Book 2, Rosemont has carefully selected a colt and a filly to headline his first crop at the season’s first sale and Jones is excited about what the season holds for the popular first season Victorian stallion.

“Nostra has left an outstanding first crop and after a long wait, it’s great to finally see his first yearlings go through the ring at the Gold Coast. Magic Millions were super impressed with all his stock when they came to see them and we’ve picked out two fantastic types to kick him off here. All his foals have been athletic, balanced, great moving types – just like Nostra himself – and we think these two are excellent examples of his stock that will sell well and hopefully set the tone for a successful first season selling in the ring.”

“He has got so much going for him – he served 200 mares in his first two seasons, he’s been well supported not only by Rosemont but also by breeding right holders, his foals and yearlings are all great types, he’s a son of Medaglia D’Oro who is no longer shuttling, he’s a half to Star Witness who has been so successful and this Spring added Graff to his growing list of good horses….. he has everything in place to succeed and we can’t wait to get started with him right here at this sale.”

Nostradamus is not the only first season sire represented in Rosemont’s Magic Millions draft. Catalogued as lots 300 and 793, we are also selling a pair of colts out of stakes winning mares by Vancouver, another Medaglia D’Oro first season sire who promises to also be popular with buyers at a different level of the market. The first of those is the first foal of the stakes winning Snitzel mare Ygritte. From the family of the Gr 1 Oaks winner Tycoon Lil, he carries the strong and compact build of his broodmare sire and is sure to launch his mother’s breeding career in fine style. The second Vancouver colt is from the stakes winning Choisir mare Messenger, a half-sister to the Caulfield Guineas winner God’s Own from the family of the horse from heaven Saintly.

On top of the first season and headline sires like Snitzel, I Am Invincible and Fastnet Rock, the Rosemont draft also features yearlings by proven successful sires such as Choisir, Nicconi, Al Maher and Starspangledbanner, as well as sires building their records such as Brazen Beau, Sizzling, All Too Hard and Wandjina. With a horse therefore for everyone’s taste and everyone’s budget, we are confident we have assembled a draft that will cater for everyone and we can’t wait to get to the Gold Coast and start parading.
