Starcraft - Stallion
- Pedigree Analysis
- Race Record
A Group One winner of five races in Australia, New Zealand, France and the United Kingdom, Starcraft (NZ) is a stallion that oozes class, not only on the track, but in the breeding barn.
An impressive-looking chestnut stallion, Starcraft (NZ) came to the attention of racegoers early in his three-year-old season with victory in the Group Three Debonair at Flemington, before a gallant second at his next start in the Group One Australian Guineas behind the unbeaten Reset.
Sent to Sydney’s Autumn carnival, Starcraft (NZ) defeated a quality field in the Group One Chipping Norton Stakes at his first start, clearly signalling that the son of Soviet Star (USA) was a class galloper. Defeating the likes of Ambulance, Gentle Genius, Excellerator, Freemason and Platinum Scissors in the Chipping Norton, Starcraft (NZ) stepped up to the 2000m of the Group Two Tulloch Stakes next time out and once again proved successful.
The time-honoured Group One Australian Derby was next on the cards, and after settling back in the field, Starcraft (NZ) came with a well-timed run to catch the tearaway leader and record success in the blue-riband event with Group One performers Delzao, Timbourina, Elvstroem, Special Harmony and Niello all finishing astern.
Spelled and sent back to New Zealand to commence his Spring campaign, Starcraft (NZ) proved successful in the Group One Mudgway Stakes and the Group Two Stoney Bridge Stakes before a second in the Group One Kel Capital. Heading back to Melbourne, he ended his Australian campaign with third-placed efforts behind Mummify in the Group One Yalumba Stakes and behind the lightly weighted three-year-old Savabeel in the Group One W.S. Cox Plate.
Sent to the Newmarket stable of famed international trainer Luca Cumani, Starcraft (NZ) finished third first up in the Group One Queen Anne Stakes behind Valixir (Ire) and Rakti (GB), before heading to France two starts later and capturing the Group One Prix du Moulin by two-and-a-half lengths from the French filly Gorella (Fr), who would later head to the USA and win the Group One Beverly D Stakes.
Three weeks later Starcraft (NZ) headed to Newmarket’s “Rowley Mile” to contest the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over 1600m. Taking on the might of Godolphin’s Dubawi (Ire), a last-start winner in the Group One Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville, the clash was mouth-watering.
Ridden by French jockey Christophe Lemaire, Starcarft (NZ) defeated the cream of Europe’s top milers to win the prestigious race, three-quarters-of-a length ahead of Dubawi (Ire).
After one final start, Starcraft (NZ) was retired to stand at Arrowfield Stud in the Hunter Valley and then transferred to Rosemont Stud in Victoria in 2014. He is a proven sire of Group 1 winners, headed by his son Star Witness who won the Blue Diamond Stakes and Coolmore Stakes and is now himself a successful sire. In recent years he has built an especially impressive record in Hong Kong where his progeny are keenly sought after.
